Ritual Abuse and Mind Control - The Manipulation of Attachment Needs (Paperback, New): Orit Badouk-Epstein, Joseph Schwartz,... Ritual Abuse and Mind Control - The Manipulation of Attachment Needs (Paperback, New)
Orit Badouk-Epstein, Joseph Schwartz, Rachel Wingfield Schwartz
R1,167 Discovery Miles 11 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

People who have survived ritual abuse or mind control experiments have often been silenced, accused of lying, mocked and disbelieved. Clinicians working with survivors often find themselves isolated, facing the same levels of disbelief and denial from other professionals within the mental health field. This report - based on proceedings from a conference on the subject - presents knowledge and experience from both clinicians and survivors to promote understanding and recovery from organized and ritual abuse, mind control and programming. The book combines clinical presentations, survivors' voices, and research material to help address the ways in which we can work clinically with mind control and cult programming from the perspective of relational psychotherapy.

Crosscutting Social Circles - Testing a Macrostructural Theory of Intergroup Relations (Paperback, New Ed): Peter Blau, Joseph... Crosscutting Social Circles - Testing a Macrostructural Theory of Intergroup Relations (Paperback, New Ed)
Peter Blau, Joseph Schwartz
R1,418 Discovery Miles 14 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Crosscutting Social Circles describes a theory of groups' relations to each other, and tests the theory in the 125 largest metropolitan areas In the United States. The focus is on the Influence social structure exerts on intergroup relations. Blau and Schwartz show how role relations are influenced by how people are distributed among social positions. Examples are a community's racial composition, division of labor, ethnic heterogeneity, income Inequality, or the extent to which educational differences are related to income differences. Blau and Schwartz test their theory by considering its impact on such structural conditions as intermarriage, an important form of intergroup relations.

The authors derive the main principles of previously formulated theories of intergroup relations and present them in simpler and clearer form. They empirically test the power of the theory by analyzing its ability to predict how social structure affects intermarriage in the largest American cities, where three-fifths of the American population live. They selected cities because population distribution of a small neighborhood might be affected by casual associations among neighbors; it is much more sociologically interesting if population distribution also affects mate selection in a city of millions.

Unlike most theories that emphasize the implications of such cultural orientations as shared values and common norms, this volume focuses on the significance of various forms of inequality and heterogeneity. As one of the few books that supplies a large-scale empirical test of implications of a theory, Crosscutting Social Circles serves as a model. The new introduction by Peter Blau reviews the origins and impact of the book. It will be of immense value to sociologists, psychologists, and group relations specialists.

Cassandra's Daughter - A History of Psychoanalysis (Hardcover): Joseph Schwartz Cassandra's Daughter - A History of Psychoanalysis (Hardcover)
Joseph Schwartz
R4,013 Discovery Miles 40 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work presents a complete history of psychoanalysis from its origins in 19th-century medical science to the end of the 20th century. The origins of psychoanalysis as well as the more immediate influences on Freud are explored, as is the way the discipline he founded has developed and changed.Joseph Schwartz first lays out the late Victorian approaches to mental illness and health and explains the context in which Freud's revolution took place. He traces the evolution of Freud's own thought, then shows how and why the rifts and shifts in the analytic community occurred. He then focuses on Freud's colleagues, rivals, successors and detractors - Jung, Adler, Sullivan, Melanie Klein, Erich Fromm to name a few. For once we see how the different schools and interpretations fit together - how they grew in response to each other, and what separate contributions each pioneer made over the last hundred years to create an effective understanding of the world of human subjective experience.

Sexuality and Attachment in Clinical Practice (Paperback): Kate White, Joseph Schwartz Sexuality and Attachment in Clinical Practice (Paperback)
Kate White, Joseph Schwartz
R694 Discovery Miles 6 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The significance of attachment and its relationship to sexuality is crucial in our psychological worlds. This book explores our thinking about the developmental, relational and interpersonal aspects of the links between attachment and sexuality as they emerge in clinical practice. Leading clinicians discuss ways in which attachment and sexuality are experienced and expressed in the therapeutic encounter. The papers are informative and provocative, exploring the subject of attachment and sexuality within contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In the main paper, Jody Messler Davies presents an object-relational analysis of the particular nature of sexual arousal and satisfaction, and a clinical case vignette is provided to illustrate her theory. Contributors: Jody Messler Davies, Joanna Ryan, Joseph Schwartz, Rachel Wingfield and Judy Yellin

17 2 STRESS FIELDS FOR SIMPLE STRUCTURES 2. 1 INTRODUCTION In this chapter the behavior and strength of simple structures made of rein forced or prestressed concrete is investigated with the aid of stress fields. In particular, the webs and flanges of beams, simple walls, brackets, bracing beams and joints of frames are investigated. By this means, the majority of design cases are already covered. In reality, all structural components are three-dimensional. Here, however, components are considered either directly as two-dimensional plate elements (i. e. the plane stress condition with no variation of stress over the thickness of the element) or they are subdivided into several plates. Since two-dimensional structural elements are statically redundant, it is pOSSible for a particular loading to be in equilibrium with many (theoretically an infinite number of) stress states. If the lower bound method of the theory of plasticity is employed, then an admissible stress field or any combination of such stress fields may be selected. In chapter 4 it is shown that this method is suitable for the design of reinforced concrete structures, and the consequence of the choice of the final structural system on the structural behavior is dealt with in detail. The first cases of the use of this method date back to Ritter [6] and Morsch [4], who already at the beginning of the century investigated the resultants of the internal stresses by means of truss models.
